The Open Network (TON) has rapidly emerged as a leading Layer 1 blockchain in 2024, largely due to its integration with Telegram’s 950 million-user platform. Originally launched in 2017 as Telegram Open Network, TON overcame SEC challenges before being adopted by the open-source community. Its viral growth stems from “tap-to-earn” games like Notcoin and Hamster Kombat, which attracted over 350 million users through Telegram’s mini-app ecosystem. This integration provides seamless crypto onboarding via native wallets and simplified UX. While currently gaming-focused, TON’s unique distribution channel presents significant DeFi potential to reach mainstream audiences, though challenges around developer adoption, scalability, and bot prevention remain. The platform’s ability to leverage Telegram’s social features positions it to potentially revolutionize crypto adoption at scale.
